Smart Rules let you route QR Code to different destinations based on conditions like time, device, or location. With the State condition, you can now target scans down to the state, province or region — useful when a regulation or campaign requires state-specific content, such as ingredient-disclosure rules that vary by state. Previously, Smart Rules could only approximate this with a location radius (latitude/longitude + distance), which left gaps near state borders that a radius couldn't cover.
Prerequisites
This feature is available on the Core plan and above (Smart Rules tier).
Who can use this feature
Admins, Editors, and Owners can configure a State rule.
Viewers cannot create or view Smart Rule QR codes.
Add a State condition to a Smart Rule
Sign in to your Uniqode account
Click +Create, select QR Code
Choose Smart Rules QR type
Select State from the list of available conditions
In the next screen, click +Add State
Select a State, region or province and click Save
Set the destination you want scans from that state routed to, also set up a backup.
Click Next to customize your QR Code
Click Finish
Uniqode resolves each scan's location to a state using the same boundary-lookup method it uses for country-level resolution, then sends the scanner to the destination you've mapped.
Note: State resolution has an accuracy limit very close to state borders. If your rule card shows an info icon next to the State condition, hover over it for details on this limitation.
How State rules work with your other rules
The State condition works alongside your existing Time, Location, and Country rules on the same QR code.
Note: Only state-level granularity is supported. County, province, and ZIP-code-level targeting are out of scope for this feature.
Creating State rules via API or Google Sheets
You can also configure State-based Smart Rules through the Uniqode API or the Google Sheets bulk-creation plugin, in addition to the dashboard.
Tips for best results
Use State rules for regulatory or compliance content If you need to show different disclosures because of state-specific requirements (like ingredient-disclosure laws), a State rule is more precise than a location radius, especially for scans near a border.
Only add State rules where you need them If you already route by country, you don't need to set a state for every country — add State conditions just for the countries where you need finer targeting.
Review scans near state lines Because state resolution depends on boundary lookup, check your scan analytics for locations close to a state border if precision matters for your use case.
